
There have been many times when nature has conjured up the three elements required to flood Whitstable. The one within memory was in 1853 but there have been others like 1897 that changed the layout of the area between the walls as it destroyed houses but never the spirit of the inhabitants.
This page will build as we learn more about events of November 1897.
The following pictures were produced as postcards in the early 1900's by W. J. Cox in the High Street. They would have been made from black & white photographs, colour then being added as part of the printing process.

This scene was in the area of the Hotel Continental, looking west towards the harbour. On the right you can see a one brigantine passing another as it enters the harbour. Needless to say none of the buildings in this picture survive to this day.

We are still trying to trace the exact location where this picture was taken. At first we thought it might be Cromwell Road with the stream being that which is now beneath Stream Walk. Then perhaps it could be Wavecrest from the (now) golf links. Can anyone shed any more light on this?
