Fifty years have elapsed since out town faced the possibility of invasion and I hope the following pages will answer some of the questions which are bound to arise on this anniversary.

I have examined the strategy of defence and the personnel involved – particularly where the Home Guard is concerned. The role of the Regular Army in Whitstable and of the ARP has largely fallen outside the scope of this study.

This little booklet is in a way my own small tribute to those of our community who served – and died – during the “Battle of Britain”.

If you, the reader, were one of those who lived within our borders at the time (as I was), and if you have memories to share, or photos or souvenirs, please do so via the Oystertown website. We would love to hear from you.
