George Barnes & the “Emma”

Hello there!
Can someone please help me out…one of my ancestors was George Barnes who was Master of the Emma in April 1861.
Would love to know more about him, his family and the Emma.
Apparently, both sides of my father’s family were from Whitstable or Sheldwich (Barnes, Jackson, Child). The Barnes and the Childs were onetime owners of the Steam Packet Inn (sometime between 1871 and 1901 – the only dates I have been able to dig up) and the Jacksons were tailors on High Street.
Thanks to all of you if you can come to my rescue…

I believe George Barnes was the son of Thomas and Hannah Barnes, baptized Whitstable 2 Mar 1828. Thomas was born ca 1792 in Sturry, and Hannah ca 1794 Dover. Thomas was a glazier, painter, and plumber at various times.

Suzannah & Carolyn, thank you both so much! off to fit in all your details on my tree… it all seems to tie in …
Will get back to you later … you don’t happen to have photos of the Emma or the Steam Packet Inn ? does the Inn still
exist? I guess not.
I’m so grateful to you both … on the male side by marriage, am busy investigating the Jemmett family … for the moment,
no sticky questions
Have a good evening
Ann

When the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway was built an Inn was built at both ends. The Steam Packet at Whitstable
was within the confines of the Harbour but facing onto the road.
The building that replaced the one that your ancestors lived in still exists, but is now the clubhouse of the local angling
club.
Here is a picture inĀ overlooking the backwater in which the earlier building can be seen. It’s the one in the
background with ships masts behind it.

Brian,
Thank you ever so much! My week begins with the sun here in La Rochelle and a marvellous photo to put into my family history album.
