I am trying to trace information on my great-grandparents. My great-grandfather was a fisherman in Whitstable, and his surname was Rigden.
My grandmother was Violet Charlotte Ann Rigden born March 1908 – February 2002 born in Whitstable.
I can remember as a child having been brought up in Faversham going to Whitstable to a fish and chip shop. The shop was constructed of timber and I believe painted white. Coming from the Faversham end of Whitstable the shop was on the right hand side. Not sure but I think there was a railway bridge just past the shop.
The visit was about the late 1940′s to early 1950′s.
Appreciate any information that can be given.
Regards to all Ana:)

Hi Ana
Your great grandparents were Alfred John Rigden and Emily Jane Shilling.
I cannot help about the fish and chip shop, though!

Thank you Grey Squirrel
Do you know the dates of birth of their date of death?
There is a bit of confusion in the family. My mother says she was brought up by them until she was about 5, whilst my grandmother always said her mother died when she was 13.
Regards Ana

Alfred John Rigden was born in 1884 in Whitstable and died in July 1940 in Faversham. Emily Jane Rigden nee Shilling was born 24 Jul 1887 in Seasalter and died in June 1937 in Faversham. They married 1 April 1905 in the register office.
Alfred John fought in the Buffs in WW1, having volunteered in September 1914. He caught malaria in 1918 and was discharged in 1919 on a pension. He was 5′ 5″ tall, 142 lbs, with a 38″ chest according to army service papers.
I do not know anything about any estrangement in the family. Other users of this forum are related and may be able to shed light on this. However, in 1911, Emily Jane was at the family home at 7 Guinea Alley with the three oldest children Maude, Violet and Alfred jr – Alfred John was not at home (he may just have been at sea).
Do the above details sound right to you?
