Hi Carolyn

Many thanks for your very prompt and useful response to my query re Stephen Tall and his parents. I am still unsure of
where to go to find out about Stephen who must have been only about 1 year old when his father died. As I understand
it, his mother remarried that same year (1834) but yet Stephen aged about 8 years does not show up anywhere in the
1841 Census so far as I can tell. Any further suggestions gratefully received.

Hi Suzannah

I am very grateful for the information supplied regarding the Tall and Goodwin families. What a pity that the 1841
Whitstable Census is not available. The Peter Tall you mention is my wife’s 3xGreat Grandfather, about whom we knew
nothing at all …not even his name. So many thanks for pointing us in the right direction. We hope to be able to continue
on from here. John Tall, who died in Riverton, New Zealand (Stephen’s brother) was Harbour Master at Riverton up until the time of his death. Stephen was on his way to Riverton on the Anna when she capsized in a gale, drowning all three crew members.

If I can assist you with anything at this end, please let me know.

Hi

I’m new to the forum. I found this Oystertown website while researching Seasalter, the place where my ancestor Daniel
Tall came from.

I was therefore thrilled to read the information about my ancestors on this site, and to be able to go back three
generations from what I had already researched! (Thank you Suzannah Foad for posting that information.)

Further to this topic of Stephen Tall, here is information on his brother John Tall, both sons of Daniel and Harriet Tall.

…………………………

John Tall was born 22-7-1830 Seasalter, Kent;

married 7-9-1862 Melbourne, Australia;

died 3-9-1887 Riverton, New Zealand

John married Eliza Shersby

born c1828-32 Barking, Essex;

died 7-8-1915 Timaru, New Zealand

Eliza (n?e Shersby) was the widow of William Abrams bc1823 Essex

whom she married 11-8-1850 Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London; he died 1860 Australia.

(Eliza and William had three children of whom two daughters, Eliza and Elizabeth Ann, survived infancy. John Tall
treated them as his own.)

John and Eliza had three children:

1.

Edwin John Tall

born 7-12-1865 Riverton, New Zealand;

married 26-4-1898 Bluff, New Zealand;

died 8-5-1958 Invercargill, New Zealand

Edwin married Mary McGilvery

born 10-6-1873/5 Glasgow, Scotland;

died 4-5-1952 Invercargill

Edwin and Mary had four children. Their eldest son John was my grandfather.

2.

HARRIET LOUISA Tall

born 2-2-1868 Riverton, New Zealand;

married 1) 11-5-1892;

married 2) 9-7-1902 Timaru, New Zealand;

died 8-8-1948 Timaru, New Zealand

Harriet married HERBERT HULL

born c1848-53;

died 26-1-1901 Timaru, New Zealand

Harriet then married SAMUEL GREENE

born 19-6-1866 Yambuk, Australia

died 4-9-1931 Timaru, New Zealand

Harriet had three children with Herbert Hull and two children with Samuel Greene

3.
ARABELLA GOODWIN Tall

born 3-3-1870 Riverton, New Zealand;

married 1899 Wellington, New Zealand;

died 18-12-1933 Riverton, New Zealand

Harriet married HARRY AKHURST

born c1869 Reading, England;

died 10-6-1935 Riverton, New Zealand

Arabella and Harry had one son

………………………..

STEPHEN TALL married MARTHA LEEDS. They had six children: Harriet, Albert, Martha, Harry Stephen, Lloyd and
Edwin.

…………………………

I have been able to trace most of John’s descendants but only a couple of Stephen’s. If “aesmith” is interested, perhaps
he might like to get in contact with me to compare our New Zealand findings.

Re Suzannah Foad’s info above about Harriet Foad (previously Tall, n?e Goodwin) living ?with her daughter Frances…?
in the 1881 census.

According to the 1851 census, Harriet and Stephen Foad were living with children Jane, Thomas, Henry, Eliza, Edwin
and Harriet (also James, possibly Stephen?s son by his first marriage, and John Tall, one of Harriet?s two sons by her
first marriage).

In the 1861 census five of those six Foad children (excluding Henry) are living with their parents plus one extra child,
Albert (I think it says Albert, it?s hard to read).

In 1871 Harriet and Stephen are alone.

So i wonder about Harriet?s ?daughter Frances?. I don?t have the 1881 census. Is it possible Frances is Harriet?s
daughter-in-law, or maybe Frances was just not at home on the census nights of 1851 and 1861?

I?d appreciate it if anybody could clear this up.

One fact to add — there was (at least) 1 more child of Peter Tall and Mary Brook:

William bap 10 Jan 1795 Seasalter

Presumably he died at some date before the birth of William #2 circa 1805/06.

I believe the Tall family came from Herne. There is a Peter bapt there 3 Dec 1766 to Peter and Ann(e) Seal. They
married in Herne 11 Nov 1761. The 1766 Peter was a replacement for an older Peter who died in infancy.

Kent FHD CD21 has the BMDs for Herne.

I also remember seeing a Herne Tall in the Canterbury M Licences on CD18.

Hmm, I cannot find my CD 21 but will accept that he is the only one I have come across. I shall also check CD which I
know I can locate!

Thanks Grey xx
