im seeking info on a character called walter skimps camburn who was a familiar sight around the town in the
1950s. apparently he lived in a hut in clowes wood, and liked to sit on a stone at the bottom of borstal hill talking to
passers by. ive read he was deeply religious, gentle and harmless, but could be aggressive when provoked.youngsters
would often torment him. i mentioned him to my nan over christmas, and she clearly recalled him, though she knew him as walter scimps and probably didnt realise she could be related to him. id like to know where he fits into the camburn tree and why he chose the lifestyle he did. any stories and recollections would be greatly appreciated,

thanks,lee.

Walter was born 1862 to James Henry Camburn 1841 – 1916 and Sarah Lawson 1834-1892 all Whitstable. They didnt
marry and lived apart.

Walter married my Mary Ann Foad 1840-1924, 20 years his senior in 1890. She was quite motherley to him and when
she passed away I believe this was when he became quite reclusive. Walter died 1941.

susannah, very many thanks for that. ive had a look at my tree, and discovered that james henry camburn was the uncle of my g grandfather nelson, the brother of his father nathaniel(1833). that means that skimps was my g grandfathers ist
cousin. ill add him to my tree.i dont know if youve seen, but i sent you a personal message asking if i can view your gu
tree, as ive sent quite a few messages through that site but im not sure if theyre getting through; the last was a couple of
hours ago. im really keen to view your tree as we share many ancestors. mine is open to you. incidently, i wonder how he got his nickname, and what a great photo.

thanks again,lee.
