I'm also being very silly, I do know James John's fathers name cos I've got his marriage cert, its Stephen Philpott, Mariner. James John was 29 when he married on 24 December 1881, could he be the same James who's on the 1881 census as being on the 'New Union'. Its nice to find them on a boat but it really doesn't help to connect them with other family members, oh well, I guess it makes it all a bit more of a challenge.
