As we look around the local cemeteries for specific gravestones we usually photograph and catalogue all of those that we think may have a direct connection to one of our featured families. If we published all of these pictures at high resolution we would use up all of our web-space very quickly. As many of the families are connected at some point in their history we don't always know just who might be interested in a particular picture and no-one wants their inbox filled up with random pictures of gravestones.
Our answer to this problem was to build this index page which grows as more photographs are taken. This has the advantage of the names being included in our own and internet search engines.
If you ever find a match for a name you are looking for on this page just use email us and we will send you a copy of our original image of the headstone, usually about 470k in size. All we ask in return is you let us know your possible connection with the person so that we can help put you and others that also have a match in touch with each other.
This is not an offer to search for a specific grave in an unknown location. We just don't have the resources.
We list the details as shown below, and if information is missing it is because we cannot read it.
We do nothing to any headstone to improve its legibility.
If we cannot get close without standing on the area of the grave we zoom in. This can reduce the quality of the image.
Some churchyards are now allowing nature to take over older areas. This can result in graves being found amongst trees and bushes, the roots having caused major movement of the headstones. In these cases we do not normally take photographs because of the distress it may cause, just noting the details for our records.
Headstones unprotected from the elements, particularly those made from sandstone, do not age well. It is often difficult to read anything from such a headstone after 100 years, so don't be too hopeful.
We do not take pictures of graves less than 15 years old in respect to the feelings of the living.
Last year we came across a memorial and photographed it because it was unusual for this area. It was quite old and made of wood, with the inscripition painted on. Recently we came across it again, but now the paint had finally peeled off making the words illegible. The photograph we had taken may now be the only record of this grave. One day someone may find this record on this site and learn information about their ancestor that otherwise they would never have known.
We are in the process of making a grid layout of the four Whitstable cemeteries, All Saints' Church, Millstrood Road (municipal), Seasalter (old Church)and Swalecliffe Church. We will then be able to provide a reference to an on-site map which will enable people to find the location of a grave within a few yards. For now the Location is limited to the cemetery, AS, MR, SE, SW.
Where we have more information on the named person there will be a link under 'Site Link'. A number under 'Descendants Tracked' means that we have correspondence details of ancestors whom we can contact to let them know of your interest.
We are sure that the three churches would not refuse any small donation you might like to make to them having used these details.
