As you dredge through the pages of Oystertown, (sorry, a dreadful pun), you will come across references to places and buildings. It's quite natural to be curious about these places and want to see them.
We thought we would take this one stage further. Not only are we showing present day pictures but images of the same scenes in the past. The early images are mainly from old postcards, many of which were monochrome and then coloured during the printing process. Where possible for the current picture we attempt to find the spot from where the original was taken, but often newer buildings obscure the view. The difference in camera lenses over the years also means it is difficult to get a exact overlay. When we can it does add to the effect.
On a technical note, you don't have to wait for a page full of images to load, but when you mouseover the link for an image you may experience some delay as it is loaded, depending on the speed of your connection. Once loaded you can mouseover and off an image to watch the years rollback before your eyes.

As we collect more old pictures of Whitstable and the surrounding areas this page will expand into a full section for them. Other work in the pipeline is a virtual tour of the town today by mouseover from various points on a map.
In the meantime if you have any old photographs you would like to share please let us know.
