In searching through the collected images of Whitstable in the Oystertown files we often find pictures that don’t really fall into any specific catergory but will be of interest to someone perusing these pages. This page is a collection of images that contain names familiar to many and show that these people, or families, are still part of day to day life to today’s residents of the town. These have been selected in a completely random order, with no preference of any kind.

The original Congregational Church is now the Whitstable Playhouse Theatre. At the rear, in Middle Wall, is the building that now houses the church (now The United Reformed Church). This building was the original church hall. Several of the stones laid when it was built are still legible.

| St. Peter’s Church is one of the newer church buildings in the town. Surrounded by the rows of terraced houses this church, often called ‘The Fisherman’s Church’, has a stone that can only be seen by looking over the hedge that runs alongside it in St. Peters Street. The font of the legend is difficult to read at first but as you look harder you can read – A.R. Court and A.H.Ougham wardens, G.Browning, builder. | ![]() |

Westmeads School in Cromwell Road where thousands of Whitstable children started their education, proclaims its origins. The building has recently been extended. Above the old doorway is marked ’1904′, above the new one ’2004′. The newer section has been built to match the original in appearance so the work of the architect, A.A. Kemp, has been repeated 100 years after his original plans.

| Foremans Alley runs alongside Stagg Cottage. The Oyster Company say that the sea-side of this property is on their land and they want it back. The present owner disputes this but has drawn a line across his living room to portray the situation. It appears this case will go up through the courts which should be interesting because it means that all of the original documentation regarding the Oyster Company and its claims to the surrounding land will be legally analysed and this should remove any future ambiguity. It may also show how our ancestors gained and then lost our rightful inheritance. | ![]() |
There are of course many other names from the past on show in the town as roads or alleys. These include Collars Alley, Gann Road, Kemp Road, Harvey Way, Saddleton Road, Leggetts Lane, Kemp Alley.
